Alan Winston has been calling Regency, English, Early American, and Victorian dance since 1985. He’s called for balls, camps, and special events from Southern California to the Bay Area to Oregon, Washington, and Victoria BC. His clear, cheerful, and witty instruction serve dancers well, and it is Alan’s great joy to share the joy of community through country dance.
Give seven musicians and friends some English country dance music to play, and they’re Quite Carried Away! Our house band is Dick Holdstock on octave mandolin and banjo, Susan Jones and Sandra Westfall on concertinas, Arlene Jamar on piano, Jane Kostka on whistle, Martin Lodahl on viola da gamba, and David Wright on fiddle and mandolin.
As usual, beginners are welcome and no partners are necessary. If you are bringing, or know of any, first-timers, please urge them to come at 2:30 for the introductory workshop that precedes the dance. All dancers are welcome at the workshop, but first-time attendees receive a coupon for half-off admission at their next dance! For more information, and lost and found, call Laura Leonelli, 916-549-7093, or email email@example.com.
The following Saturday, March 11, is just the ticket for those who’d enjoy a faster-paced afternoon of English Country Dancing. We’ll be holding our annual Playford Ball Workshop, with Alisa Dodson calling to music from Rebecca King and Maggie Moore. This is not a dance for beginners! We will NOT be offering an introductory session for first-timers before this dance. Regardless of whether you intend to go to the BACDS Playford Ball, this dance is a wonderful opportunity to learn or review many dances in one afternoon. Note the special time and location – SATURDAY, March 11, from 2-5 pm, at YLI, 1400 – 27th St., in midtown Sacramento – and the special donation, $12 per person.
On Saturday, March 25, SCDS is pleased to support our first ECD outreach event, and all our dancers are invited to participate! Liberty Ranch High School in Galt is holding a Jane Austen Regency Ball, with calling by Lise Dyckman and music by our very own Quite Carried Away. Our caller and band would especially appreciate participation by our regular dancers, to facilitate the enjoyment of the high school students who are new to ECD!
