Zesty Contra and English Country Dances

We’re hosting two dances on the same weekend: a zesty contra on Saturday, September 30th, and an English country dance on Sunday, October 1st. Details for both dances are below.

The Zesty Contra:

Talent: Kalia Kliban calling to the music of The Swingin’ Chickens
Date: Saturday, September 30, 2017
Time: 8:00–11:00 pm, with newcomer’s orientation at 7:30 pm
Location: Coloma Community Center, 4623 T St, Sacramento, CA
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check)

30Sept_contraThis is a special zesty contra dance, with no newcomer’s orientation. Dances will be taught quickly, and dancers should be familiar with hey for four, Petronella turns, and contra corners. This is an evening for experienced dancers who want to dance with enthusiasm!

Kalia Kliban has been part of the Bay Area dance community since the mid-80s, performing and teaching contra and English country dance, along with many other styles. Her clear and humorous teaching style has gotten feet tapping at camps and gatherings in California and beyond.

The Swingin’ Chickens are Topher Gayle, Lee Anne Welch, and Rebecca King. Topher Gayle has played contra dances for over fifteen years, touring nationally with TheOpporTunists and locally with The Rosin Doctors. Lee Anne Welch is a sought-after contra dance fiddler who has played with several bands, including Luceo, Peak Nouveau, Balance & Swing, and Bandemonium! Rebecca King is a versatile dance pianist, conductor, and composer, whose strong classical training and love of jazz shows in her rhythmic and lyric piano accompaniments.

No partners are needed, so come by yourself or with friends or with family. Potluck snacks are available at the break, and we encourage you to bring something to share. These events are accessible to people with disabilities.

The English Country Dance:

  • Talent: Kalia Kliban calling to the music of Quite Carried Away
  • Date: Sunday, October 1st, 2017
  • Time: 3:00-6:00 pm, with newcomer’s workshop at 2:30 pm
  • Location: Polish American Hall, 327 Main St, Roseville
  • Cost: $10 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check)

We are so fortunate to have some of the best calling talent in the world near us! Those who attended last month were treated to a fabulous program by Bruce Hamilton. This Sunday, we continue the energy and enthusiasm with yet another of the country’s top callers, Kalia Kliban! Quite Carried Away provides the perfectly matched music, with Kathrine Gardner filling in for David Wright this month.

This dance is the second of our two special “Bring a Friend for Free” dances. This is a perfect time to bring along one new dancer (or several!) — each regular dancer may bring one first-time attendee for free. All first-timers are still eligible to receive a coupon for half off their next dance if they attend our introductory session at 2:30, a half hour before the dance. So bring a snack to share at the dance, and bring a friend for free!

For more information on either dance and lost and found, call Laura Leonelli, 916-549-7093, or email info@sactocds.org.

Upcoming events:
October 14: potluck and contra dance
October 28: family (afternoon) and Halloween (evening) contra dances
November 5: English country dance
