The Swingin’ Chicken are Lee Anne Welch, Dave Courchaine, Kathrine Gardner and Topher Gayle.
Lee Anne Welch is a seasoned and sought-after Contra dance fiddler who has played with several bands, including Luceo, Peak Nouveau and Balance & Swing. Her longest-standing partnership is with with Seattle-based pianist Eric Anderson in the high-energy duo Bandemonium! They can be heard locally at Bay Area dances, have toured throughout the United States, and have also performed in Canada and the Caribbean.
Dave Courchaine has been playing bluegrass, old-time and contra dance music in the Bay Area since the 1980s. He is a veteran of a number of bluegrass and contra dance bands, and currently plays guitar with the Whiskey Brothers and Uncle Dave. He has been seen jamming at all hours in parking lots and fairgrounds throughout the state, and has been heard to say “Let’s pick!”
Kathrine Gardner has been a dedicated dance fiddler since the mid 80’s, and has played in many great Bay Area bands including the Contra Bandits, Guppies, Uncle Dave and the KJammers. Many have fallen in love with her ethereal yet driving fiddle playing.
Topher Gayle has always enjoyed the social aspects of music-making. He most enjoys working with musicians who have fun together. So it’s natural that he’s in a bunch of bands with a bunch of different people playing many styles of music. Topher has played contra dances for over fifteen years, touring nationally with TheOpporTunists, and locally with The Rosin Doctors.
