What to Wear If you’re attending your first contra dance or English Country dance event, you may be wondering what type of attire to wear – certainly you want to be comfortable and also fit in with the crowd!
First and foremost, the most important thing to wear is a very comfortable pair of shoes. In particular, contra dancing can be vigorous and you want to wear shoes in which you can move freely and execute dance movements safely. Leave the high heels at home as well as any hard soled shoes that may cause damage to the dance floor. Choose a shoe with soft, smooth soles – rubber soled shoes are comfortable, but thick rubber soles may stick to the floor during turns and twirls causing potential damage to knees and ankles. Although those strappy sandals may be cute, you’ll be much more at ease in comfortable, sensible shoes.
Loose, comfortable clothes that don’t restrict movement will feel and look the best. Women generally enjoy wearing skirts or dresses that twirl when they turn or spin, and men usually wear lightweight slacks, shorts, t-shirts or lightweight button-down shirts. More importantly, save the fashion for going out on the town and don’t worry too much about your appearance. Our dances are meant to be social events that are fun and stress-free.
