Echo Summit Dance Camp 2022

Echo Summit Dance Camp returns this year on September 16-18, 2022. Come to Camp Sacramento, high in the Sierra, for a weekend of great contra dancing and music with your friends old and new! Camp Sacramento is two hours east of Sacramento off Highway 50 just west of Echo Summit at an elevation of 6600 feet. Nestled in the tall trees of the Sierra Nevada, Camp Sacramento’s refinished wooden dance floor and rustic small cabins are waiting for you to enjoy. Camp staff even sell espresso drinks in the morning, and beer and ice cream in the afternoons to keep your dance energy going.

THE CALLERS

Bob Isaacs, from Princeton NJ, squares the circles and lines up the dots with his delightful dance compositions. A prolific choreographer, Bob is known for his clear calling of flowing contras and amazing hot grid squares. He is well known for his ability to invent creative dances while remaining true to the traditional roots of contra dancing.

Cis Hinkle has delighted contra and square dancers since 1985 with her skilled teaching, welcoming manner, playful enthusiasm, and masterful selection of dances. She is in great demand at music and dance festivals all over the US, England, and Denmark.  When not on the road, Cis teaches t’ai chi classes in her native Atlanta, Georgia.

THE BANDS

Singularity

From hot contemporary fiddle tunes to driving old-time grooves, from atmospheric pulses to meticulously interwoven melodies, Singularity (Cedar Stanistreet, Guillaume Sparrow-Pepin, Everest Witman, and Ness Smith-Savedoff) sweeps dancers up with tight, dynamic music. Cedar’s spirited, rhythmic fiddle playing and clear tone keep dancers on their feet. Guillaume Sparrow-Pepin draws on jazz, classical, traditional, and world music to play piano with an expressive and dynamic style melding the worlds of accompaniment and melody. Everest Witman’s guitar playing is energetic, full of life, and informed by traditional music, especially Irish and Scottish. Ness has played the drums for folk, rock, rap, pop, and party bands, giving him a variety of rhythms to blend with contra tunes. Singularity was formed to so that these four could collaborate as one!

Eloise & Co.

Eloise & Co. features the combined creative force of three of the country’s most sought-after dance musicians, Becky Tracy, Rachel Bell, and Bethany Waickman. These three crank out dance and concert music with unbridled energy and soaring beauty. Eloise & Co. digs into powerhouse reels with electrifying grit and unapologetic drive, while savoring the spacious beauty of jigs and waltzes, with styles ranging from French to Celtic to Quebecois. Originally thrown together at a gig where Becky led the contra dance portion of the evening and Rachel led the bal folk dance part of the evening, they have continued to fuse these two elements into their concerts and dances, as well as adding songs and original compositions to the mix.
