April 27th Potluck & Anniversary Contra Dance

Please join us for our 33nd anniversary celebration at the new time of 7-10 pm. Cake will be served at the break to celebrate our anniversary, and we will elect our new Board. We will also be hosting a clothing swap at the dance. Bring the shirts, skirts, and dresses that you don’t wear any longer, and trade them for something that’s new to you!

Time: 7:00–10:00 pm, with newcomer’s orientation at 6:30 pm
Location: Coloma Community Center, 4623 T St, Sacramento, CA
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check)

We’ll kick off the night’s festivities with a community potluck, starting at 5:30 pm in the Nevada City Room at Coloma Community Center. Please bring a dish to share, along with serving utensils, and whatever you want to drink (non-alcoholic). You may also bring your own table setting to save on disposables. We will provide plates, napkins, and utensils.

Debra Tayleur plays piano for several bands, including Whimsical and The Honeysuckle Sisters. Fiddler Jon Berger, of The String Rays and Persons of Quality, has played for English country and contra dances in the San Francisco Bay Area since the early 1980s. Roxanne Oliva plays accordion, harp, and flute in multiple bands, including Whimsical.

A newcomer’s orientation is offered at 6:30 pm, perfect for people who have not contra danced before, or who could use some refresher. Experienced dancers are invited to partner with newcomers during the orientation and early dances to help integrate them into the community.

No partners are needed, so come by yourself or with friends or with family. Potluck snacks are available at the break, and we encourage you to bring something to share. These events are accessible to people with disabilities.

Join us on Saturday night for our 31st anniversary celebration, with calling by Kalia Kliban and a special guest band from the Bay area, featuring Jon Berger, Noel Cragg, and Shira Kammen. This evening will be a celebration of all of the dance types supported by our organization, including contra, English, squares, and other unusual formations. There will be a potluck dinner before the dance, and cake will be served at the break to celebrate our anniversary. The donation is $12 for adults; $8 for college students with ID; $5 for dancers under 18; $25 maximum for families (cash or check).

Kalia Kliban has been part of the Bay Area dance community since the mid-80s, performing and teaching contra and English country dance, along with many other styles. Her clear and humorous teaching style has gotten feet tapping at camps and gatherings in California and beyond. She called our 30th Anniversary Dance last year, beautifully blending contra and English dance styles to showcase the best of these traditional dance forms.

Jon Berger is an astonishing fiddler and button accordion player, who has toured with Tempest, recorded with multiple groups, and plays with passion and drive for both English and contra dances. Noel Cragg plays jazzy, swinging English and contra dance tunes. Master of piano and squeezebox, Noel brings a shot of brilliant energy to everything he plays. Multi-instrumentalist Shira Kammen has spent over half her life exploring early folk and celtic music and has performed and taught throughout the world.

Special English Country Dance September 26

Our dancers–including you!–have been invited to participate in a very special English Country Dance workshop on Sunday, September 26, that is being sponsored by the El Dorado International Dancers.  Why is this such a special opportunity? Two reasons: the workshop is being taught by Bruce Hamilton, who is in demand all over the world because of his calling and instructional skills; and the music is being provided by Rebecca King and Jon Berger, two of the most prominent ECD musicians in the country!

Please note that this is a workshop for experienced dancers–this is not designed for dancers new to English Country Dance. Also, because of the size of the dance space, the workshop can only accommodate 40 dancers. To assure yourself a spot, please get your payment to Karen Sandler by September 19. To sign up after that date, you’ll need to contact Karen to find out if there is still space.

Note: This is not a Sacramento Country Dance Society event, but we think our dancers will enjoy it.
